Millspace Arts & Culture Laureate Program 2020

The Millspace Arts & Culture Laureate Program (MACLP)  is a distinguished honor for local artists and cultural experts looking to engage the greater Newmarket community. Inspired by many communities with successful laureate programs, the Millspace Arts & Culture Laureate Program (MACLP) launched in February 2018.

Laureate candidates are invited to apply or be nominated by Sept 1, 2020 to be considered for the 2020 award and annual term.

According to laureate program coordinator John Herman, the selection committee is looking beyond the traditional. “Many laureate programs celebrate poets or fine artists. While we absolutely welcome those nominees, we are also open to all kinds of creative people. I would love to see filmmakers, photographers, novelists, and musicians applying. We are interested in celebrating the arts and culture of our community in whatever form it takes.”

The selected laureate will be honored for achieving distinction in a particular field and is expected to exhibit their craft at Millspace events and execute at least two individual community outreach arts and culture related projects or events in 2020. Each laureate will also receive a $500 monetary award.

The goals of the laureate program are to give expert individuals an opportunity to share their talents with the community, to give youth citizens role models within the community, and to encourage and nurture arts and culture in downtown Newmarket. The desired outcomes of this initiative are that each year the selected laureates will use their craft to make an impact on their community, and that community lives will be enriched by the work the laureates share.

Ideal candidates are living and working in the greater Newmarket area and have an interest in using their talents to enrich the community. A reception will be held in honor of the selected laureate(s) at Millspace’s Ignite night, which will launch the beginning of a one-year term.

To apply, applicants must submit an application and include a proposal for how they plan to fulfill certain obligations such as the two community outreach projects or events.
